what the hell he is talking about
The inhabitants are currently demolishing the new bridge that just opened.
Fast-forward to today hellcat crashes on the new 6th street bridge 😂‼️
Hey im glad to see someone from the future in this comment strip!! All these comments are years old and im sure none imagined the chaos in 2022!...ok im going back to the future!
Fuck this bitch ass bridge ..
i enjoy the LA soundscape but the man talking is kinda distracting. yesterday was the opening of the new 6th street bridge. it's bigger, safer and actually looks modern - not in an eyesore way.
We just posted a video of our drone work of the new Sixth Street Viaduct and the pouring of concrete on one of the 20 arches that will be part of the new bridge. The new bridge will a beautiful site to see when completed. Please check out our video. ua-cam.com/video/bQxDXSgn1fg/v-deo.html
The new design is ehhhhh
Boastful humanities major. Very quick to being political and petty with co workers.
When a person is required to takes only humanities classes in college (architecture degree in US is all combination english, history& art classes in college to graduate. Highschool kid heading to JC takes more STEM classes) and pontificates as much as Nobel Prize winner, how do you respond to that? Dilusion.
For the benefit of those high school kids interested in this profession, there is rampant fallacy held by people including myself before I entered architecture school that architects are technical people in traditional STEM sense in addition to working with aesthetics but that is complete false. Architecture education in US is 99% humanities discipline i.e. art, history and english with virtually no science classes to receive a diploma. If one look past often grandiose declarations (particularly known) architects make about their profession, those most satisfied with their job tend to be dim witted science wise and university education is all amalgamation of art/history/english majors. I regret graduating with this pussy degree where architects office environment can be very petty & stifling. If you honor STEM, best to stay away. Cream does not necessarily rise to the top in this profession i.e. you have to be buffoonish and sell yourself. Also many so called known architects are not from best undergrad schools including this ding dong Foster fella. That should tell you something.
Many confused people throw around false equivalency by comparing Pritzker prize to Nobel prize. Pritzker prize is just a vanity project and is a branding effort for wealthy Pritzker family name. Moreover, the prize committee is composed of mostly random buffoons who have no knowledge of building design and hence the prizes has no credibility. Its akin to trash collector in Nobel award selection committee making award for physics. Architecture is a more a humanities degree than anything. Almost all top tier us college or university do not offer this degree for a reason. Harvard graduate design school has lot of people from second, third rate undergraduate schools because most kid smart enough to get into top tier undergrad schools are too intelligent to get into this non technical profession.
bro im an architect and you trashing this profession for real? it just shows your ignorance and naivity more than anything. show some respect for people who design buildings and spaces for the city you live in.
Amazing
and they have a beautiful view of 5th street skid row. you can see the junkies pissing on the street
Due to the class of the residents of Los Angrles, this new bridge will deteriorate in to a graffiti ridden, homeless inhabited, garbage filled, urine stained toilet, just like the poor old bridge. The old one was "Beautification" the planned new one is "Revitalization" but in fact, the residents of LA have no respect for public or private property and will turn this project into shit within a year.
welcome to helLA
Wtf i dun even understand all of this?!
it's art. it's okay if you don't understand it, and it's not for everyone. i used not to as well. you only see the beauty once you start doing it yourself.
A very informative video on why this historic icon of a bridge is structurally deficient and it is very unfortunate that the original concrete mix was inferior which has unfortunately cut the lifespan of this awesome landmark horribly short.
You just can't make this stuff up.
the future of this bridge sounds pretty interesting
truth be told I hope some kids tag the crap out of that new bridge
Your parents must be very proud.
tower bridge in London. yea I think they would not tear that one down either.
the new bridge will look so out of place : (
Anybody know why they brought it down???
it's too old need new technology
+Machinima MHD so will they build a new bridge?
Yes
The design is already out
They destroyed part of it as if now
I really like the Art Deco style of this bridge. It's been years that I've drove on it. Too bad, it's being demolished as I type this. :(
thanks for the info
You guys have to go visit this place. I made a video about climbing this bridge to get a really cool view as well. Check it out on my channel.
I'm at the 6th Street Bridge demolishing it's very beautiful love LA...
This demolition will tear at my heart. My sister and I spent a good amount of weekends in the 80's taking the bus from East LA to Mid City to visit our favorite aunt. Going over the bridge was always my favorite part. Even at 8 I understood and appreciated the beauty.
The arches are one part of the bridge's beauty, but to be honest, I think more people are charmed by the art deco design elements that enhance the entire structure. There isn't a single part of the 6th street bridge that isn't "decorated" in some way. We don't seem to "celebrate" the construction of public enhancements anymore. If you look at some of California's older freeway constructions, they were DECORATED, they were half-art, half-architecture. Someone should really document all the design elements of this bridge before they replace it!
I concur. I work for CalTrans and I see and know that the only thing that receives any “artistic element” are the (usually ugly) retaining walls. Often they are imprinted with some type of local “city theme” (orange crates in Riverside). In this case the bridge was a city of LA project; thus more design input and iconic in nature!
@@christopherstevenson9737 Right, glorious aqueducts with not much water underneath them says the timeline is off.
I love going to the las Angeles river in GTA
Lol foreals
is the bridge in pasadena another relative bridge?
sounds like they forgot to turn off the cameras mic. both the lavier and shotgun sound like they are in synch with each other lol
This man is a genius
Great video - best 14 minutes spent this morning!
Alex, what do you think of the design that was chosen for the new bridge? Was it your favorite of the bunch? It was the second favorite for me. I preferred the design with the center isle for pedestrian traffic. I thought that to be a more unique design of form and function. Good video, but you should have worn a lavalier mic on your lapel.
What elements were removed?
Lol Steve job look alike
Maybe. Steve only looked a bit like Thom when he in the last period of his life, as his health was deteriorating. Interestingly, both men are (were) known to be supremely self-confident. There are stories about both of them being loudly confrontational. In the case of Mayne, shouting at a client who couldn't keep up with his genius.
Rent a bike, most rivers here have a bike route that is right next to the river. Most parts of it you can actually walk down to the river. I've seen some people ride their bikes on the riverbed. Not recommended during the fall/winter or any rainy days......but it's very beautiful now. They planted native river plants and have redone the ugly flat concrete looking canal walls with rocks so it looks more natural.
A Bullet train, the best NFL Stadium/ Convention center, New Metro Expo line from Downtown LA. to Santa Monica,( first phase already open on the 28th) and from the valley to the Airport(future project) the LA live Downtown LA, Living LA bringing back the construction of condominiums in Downtown, a new 51 mile LA River!!! the grand avenue project, New Street cars project,( see here /watch?v=h5C65fZLwg8 ) LA. under Antonio Villarraigosa has come back from being a forgotten city to a new Era.
I really like the stuff but he sucks at explaining it. Kinda bullshit saying that he does not know material
This is amazing! I truly believe that Los Angeles will be THE city of the 21st Century. Already Los Angeles is developing a breathtaking skyline, the start of a modern bullet train station, a potential home for an NFL team complete with it's own stadium, and lets not forget the grand avenue project! A new, modern bridge and revitalized river is EXACTLY what Los Angeles deserves and I'm glad to see there are people who think the same way as me! Where and when could i support?
I was just in LA and I wanted to visit this area.
Iam planning on going to Los Angeles. Is there a way anyone can walk down there any take photos?
More UA-cam video should be made this good
The piece that was redone (second reiteration at 3:09) he says it is made of an "unknown material". What? He doesn't know? Or he doesn't want to tell us what it is? He interrupts the discussion and quickly walks away to the next piece. The mystery continues.
My guess is that he doesn’t want the conversation to devolve into processes or the relationship between form making and material qualities. Rather, he is looking for a relationship between form and its material representation
@@bv32ification I don't know how to respond to that. It's not like he would be bringing the conversation down to a lower level or giving away some secret method. Or maybe he is protecting a proprietary process that only a few alchemists and Thom know.
Mr. Mayne, your work is lovely, but you are exhausting. It might help to explain less. You'll still get the credit you want.
